Topshop's Matte Metallic Nails in Usual Suspects

topshop matte metallic nails usual suspects
s
Hey there!

First off, getting sick after a trip straight up sucks. My eyes are drooping as I write this and my nose is sore from being blown into tissues. Not a great way to spend half-term break, I have to say!

Sickness aside, I'm here today to share this absolutely gorgeous gem of a nail polish I found a few months ago. Usual Suspects is a matte metallic polish, as the title suggests, and the colour is hard to explain and capture. The multi-chrome polish is a metallic silver at first glance, but in different lights reveals shades of green and magenta.

On my index finger you'll see a slight green tone, while on my ring finger is a hint of purple.

I was quite impressed with the formula of this polish as it dries quickly. Also, streaking is minimal. I was a bit careless with my middle finger so there is a teeny bit of streaking, but other than that the polish was absolutely fine.

Usual Suspects reminds me of Essie's For The Twill of It and OPI's Peace & Love & OPI; it also has that multi-chrome look that is stunning on the nails. It looks great as a matte polish or with a shiny topcoat on top.

This polish can be bought in most Topshop stores around HK, so have a look around when you pass one. A '2 polishes for $99' offer was going on when I bought this so I shared it with a friend. I have a feeling I'll be wearing this polish a lot during the coming months; it's a nice cold-weather alternative to the normal black and navy.

I'll see you next time! x

I've Been Thinking Too Much | 10 Things

s
One. I stayed up late last night to an ungodly hour (into the AM if you're wondering) and watched Marie Antoinette, directed by Sophia Coppola. Whew, what an extravaganza of a movie! Marie Antoinette's frivolous lifestyle makes me wonder a. how did nobody point out that fact that she was wasting millions earlier, and b. did she not get tired of wearing all those dresses and wigs. I like how the movie was a historical film, yet it was refreshingly modern, what with the snappy, guitar-filled score. Oh, and now I am craving all sorts of desserts; the LadurĂ©e macaroons featured in one scene looked divine. It's a wonder Marie Antoinette didn't get any cavities from her constant snacking on pastries and cakes!

Two. Having no luck with finding a comfortable pair of ripped-at-the-knees black skinny jeans, I DIY-ed my own. I am absolutely in love with them. The knee rips make wearing long pants in HK's humidity a lot more comfortable, and overall they just look good. I'm not scared to admit that I feel like a total badass in them c:

Three. In honour of National Dance Day, I would just like to say that I am loving my dance class at the moment. After so many years of no dance classes, a couple of months ago I took dancing back up. I've forgotten the thrill of dance class; with each lesson I get to improve my technique, learn new routines, and generally have fun. Plus, the additional exercise does no harm! We recently learnt a routine to The Weeknd's 'Can't Feel My Face' and, despite me not being able to spin quick enough within a beat, I'm enjoying everything.

Four. When I came back from Singapore, a group of friends and I went bowling. This was when I found out that my bowling game seriously sucks. I haven't been bowling in forever, so I guess I should cut myself some slack. Even so, a little disappointing considering bowling's fun, I used to be able to strike, and my score would be above 50.

Five. This one's a given, but I've been active on Tumblr everyday. It's strange to think that I've reblogged quite a fair amount already, yet that's only a slither in the Tumblr universe and there's more to come. Not to be all self-promo-y or anything, but check out my Tumblr here! It would be awesome to communicate with you guys and answer any questions.

Six. Last week I got really annoyed with my Essie top coat; the tip wear was ridiculous! I was so done with it, and decided to purchase another bottle of Seche Vite. The ingredients used to make it aren't the best, but it really does work. I'm wearing Sally Hansen's Lacey Lilac right now, and it's held up nicely for a few days already.

Seven. With the endless hours of freedom, I used that time to make things. My better creations out of the lot are a clay bowl, a chevron wire ring, and a crystal bullet choker. I attempted faux druzy pendants, but haven't quite got the grasp of it yet. When I do, I'm pretty sure there'll be a tutorial up on this blog!

Eight. I have been listening to Twenty One Pilots, nonstop. They came to Hong Kong last week and - sob - I didn't go. I regret not going very much as I have really come to love their music. Blurryface is another one of those golden albums; all of the track are favourites of mine. I haven't listened to Vessel enough to add it onto the list, but I am pretty sure in the future it will be on there.

Nine. Though I didn't go to the concert, my sister did. She showed me a few videos and pictures she took, and Tyler Joseph was wearing one of the most gorgeous kimonos I have ever seen. I am currently on the lookout for one like it, so if you have any ideas where I can get one that isn't too expensive, please let me know! And yes, Tyler Joseph's outfit game for the concert was on point. He's been sporting black-grey paint on his arms and neck for his Blurryface alter ego, and it actually works on him. If I ever tried to do that, I would probably end up looking like I fell into the drain!

Ten. The cork board over my desk was getting a bit cluttered, so I revamped it. I updated the polaroid pictures, rearranged my rings, and printed out a few new Tumblr images. That being said, I just couldn't take down Sassy Sangster; his expression is basically me on the inside.

Ahhhhhhh, it was good to get all that off my chest! It's nice to blog about stuff like this; there's no pressure to confine to any structure, and I personally like reading these types of posts. If you're new here, hi, I'm Hazel! All my links are on the sidebar, so go ahead and pop me a message!

Lastly, it turns out that this is my 100th post. Wow. I normally don't really go into too much detail over blog statistics, but in my eyes, 100 posts is a milestone. Thanks for all your support, it really means a lot to me!

I'll see you soon! x

[Essie] Blues For Your Nails, Not Your Mondays

essie nail polish
s
A few things you should know about me: 1. I am too nail polish-obsessed for my own good; 2. Essie is one of my favourite polish brands EVER; 3. Cool toned polishes are my go-to. Here I have four blue polishes that are perfect for the spring-summer transition.
essie nail polish
L-R: Mint Candy Apple, Bikini So Teeny, Garden Variety, Blossom Dandy

First off, these polishes have amazing formulas. Mint Candy Apple has been dubbed the 'perfect mint' by many nail bloggers, and it's definitely one you can't miss. I have never been able to find another polish with a similar tone. Bikini So Teeny is a ridiculously pretty periwinkle blue (still into that!). In the bottle the shimmer is visible but on the nail it's almost invisible, which I honestly prefer since the colour does all the talking. Garden Variety impressed me as soon as I swatched it; it's a creamy teal one-coater (though I always apply two coats to hit that maximum level of opacity). Blossom Dandy is also a mint shade, but as you can see from the picture it differs slightly from Mint Candy Apple. I say pick up both!

Collections
Mint Candy Apple: Sweet Time of the Year - Winter 2009
Bikini So Teeny: Bikini So Teeny - Summer 2012
Garden Variety: Flowerista - Spring 2015
Blossom Dandy: Flowerista - Spring 2015

If you are in Hong Kong and can't find Essie polishes, I have found two stores throughout my nail polish journey. The first one is Cher2, which is slightly better known than the other, A polish. Both companies have stores around HK, selling OPI, Essie, China Glaze, Orly, and many more. Check out their sites to find a store near you, or have fun shopping online.

I own many more cool-toned colours, but my collection won't stop there. I have my eye on Saltwater Happy from Essie's new Summer 2015 collection, Peach Side Babe. Oh, and did I mention Essie polishes have such adorable names?

What are your favourite nail polishes and brands?

Essie - After School Boy Blazer

Hey guys!

Earlier this month I purchased Essie's 'After School Boy Blazer'. I've been wanting a colour like that ever since I watched TFIOS, because the polish Hazel was wearing was described as an 'almost black dark blue'. I scoured the net to find the colour and stumbled across ASBB. It matched the description perfectly!

Essie describes it as an 'academy blue-black'. Quite fitting, but really you can't go wrong with this! In the bottle the navy-ness of it is see-able. On the nail it's a black with a tinge of blue; in sunlight it is as it looks in the bottle.

The application was amazing. The consistency is nice and thin and the polish is very pigmented. I could almost get away with a single coat of polish, but being myself I naturally messed up the first coat and had to fix it up with a second. Still, I'm impressed.

Dry time didn't take too long; I'll even say that it was quick. But of course, the weather can effect the dry time because if it's colder outside (which it finally is :)) then dry time can change.

I am very happy that I purchased this polish as it is a wonderful colour that captures that quote from TFIOS. As a bonus, it is perfect for the Autumn and Winter season. It's a unique colour because it looks like it's a basic black, but actually there's another hue to it. I definitely will purchase this again when I'm out.

Book-Hazel has her blue-black polish and now real-Hazel has hers too :)

That's all from me today, hope you had a lovely Sunday!

Nicole by OPI - I Shop Mintage

Hey guys :)

I've always been on the hunt for a nice mint polish. I thought Essie's Mint Candy Apple was the answer, but it turns out that it wasn't quite mint enough (still a nice shade!). I've scoured the net for different brands of mint polish, trying to find one that was nice and minty, and available in Hong Kong. After several websites I came across Nicole by OPI's I Shop Mintage. It was the perfect shade of mint and luckily it became available again in store. I saw it in the shop one day and immediately purchased it.

This polish is definitely my favourite mint so far. It's not too cool or grey-toned like other polishes on the market; I think it flatters my skin tone well. It reminds me of a dress from the 1960s, which the name suits.

Aside from the colour, the texture of this polish is pretty good too. It's thin but not watery, a little bit streaky after two coats, but the third coat will smooth it out just fine. It looks nice by itself but if I were to jazz it up, I would use something like Zoya's Cosmo for an accent nail.

My nails are the worst ever for painting. They're short and wide; cleanup afterwards is not a choice but mandatory *sad face*

I Shop Mintage is part of the general Nicole by OPI collection, which can be found in certain Sasa stores around Hong Kong. It costs $76 and in the bottle is 15ml of polish.

A short little post for today! See you next time xx

Summer Tag

Hey guys!

As you may know, we're now in the middle of summer! I thought it would be fun to do a tag, since I haven't done one in a few weeks. Apparently there was a spring tag that I did not know of, so as compensation I will answer questions from the summer tag!

Summer

This tag is from the blog Hollisters Happenings (or Hollistershappenings) so make sure you check it out.

Let's start!

1. What is the best part about summer?
I love the sunshine during the summer, especially on those days when the sky is blue. Most of the time the sky in Hong Kong is all muggy and horrible, so on those where the sky is clear, I savour the sunlight.

2. Do you tan or burn?
I tan, but my face gets red super easily when in contact with warmth.

3. Favourite summer nail polish?
Summer is a time for bright nail polish, and I really like "Kiss Me On My Tulips" my OPI. The formula is great, it's fully opaque in two coats, and it doesn't take forever to dry!

4. Favourite summer drink/beverage?
Recently I have been drinking this Japanese milk that tastes like coffee. It's nice and refreshing, especially when chilled.

5. Favourite summer clothing item?
Skirts all the way! I know you can wear skirts in the winter as well, but they don't keep you warm enough. I own several skirts in different colours and patterns, all circle skirts which I wear high-waisted.

6. Favourite current app during this summer?
Lately I've been using Snapchat more often. I find the concept of it really handy and fun.

7. Favourite summer movie?
I don't have a favourite movie for the summer, to be honest. However, I have yet to watch "The Fault In Our Stars" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" this summer, so that might change.

8. Favourite summer beauty product?
Are hair products counted as beauty products? Anyways, I love sea salt spray during the summer because you get nice texture and waves without having to physically go to the beach every day. I am currently using the Professional Ocean Spritz Sea Salt Spray, which I picked up in Bonjour. It has a smell that's hard to describe, but it smells pretty good.

9. Favourite summer activity?
No particular favourite, but I like going bowling or swimming.

10. Favourite type of lip product for the summer?
Lip balm, always. Personally I've never had sunburnt lips, but I slather on coats of lip balm during the summer to avoid them. The one I am using right now is the peppermint Burt's Bees lip balm. I also like tinted lip balms, such as Maybelline's Baby Lips in Berry Bomb.

So those are my answers! I tag anyone who reads this to complete this tag, so have fun with it.

And have fun during this summer; stay safe and be happy.

See you xx

June Favourites

Hey guys :)

First order of business: SUMMER.

IT'S HERE.

SCHOOL IS OUT.

AHHHHH!

So you might have noticed a little change in the title. I have decided to change from Monthly Music Favourites to monthly favourites because I like all kinds of stuff :) I want to talk about beauty products, clothes, apps and books. Obviously I'll still be writing about music, and I'll build it up from there.

Let's begin!

Music

1. 'Brooklyn Baby' by Lana del Rey
'Ultraviolence' came out this month and I really like 'Brooklyn Baby' from it. Lana del Rey presents us with a list of vintage-y, edgy songs. Her music style is one that I've never really come across before, and it's so unique.

2. 'Wicked Games' by The Weekend (HugLife a.k.a. DJ Slink remix)
A while back, a dance group at school performed to this song. They were awesome and the song stuck in my head. Early this month I found it and I was so excited! The singing has a whimsical vibe, but paired with the beat, the song changes from dreamy to edgy.

3. 'Cool Kids' by Echosmith
I learnt about this song off Bethany Mota (Macbarbie07 on YouTube) when she did her monthly favourites. The lyrics to this song are so meaningful and relate-able, and Echosmith is a cool band. It's made up of 4 siblings, ranging from 15 to 21. So young, so talented (and Sydney is absolutely gorgeous♡)

4. 'Cardiac Arrest' by Bad Suns
This song is insanely catchy, I'm not even kidding. It's fun to sing and dance to, so what's not to love?

Everything else!

1. This brush
This has to be one of the BEST hair brushes I've ever used. Like I said last week, I'm a total sucker for packaging and the colours on this are so cute! It works just as well as a Tangle Teezer, and it's WAY more affordable. I purchased it from Forever 21 last week and I use it everyday *obsessively brushing hairt*

2. This topcoat
I posted about this topcoat a few weeks ago and since then it has become my holy grail topcoat. I painted my nails a few weeks ago and then practiced a solo section on the guitar. Normally, my nails get wrecked by the strings. With this topcoat on, my nails stayed perfect; not a single scratch, even after fingerpicking! I was totally amazed by its topcoat-ness.

3. This bracelet combo
Both of these bracelets are from Forever 21 and they came in separate packages: the one with 'happiness' on it alone and the jeweled one with two other jeweled ones. I like how the bracelets look together because the thick chain contrasts against the daintiness of the other bracelet.

4. My polaroid camera
This camera is the Fujifilm instax mini 7s, purchased from Korea last year (but purchasable in Log On for you HK peeps). This week was the last week of school and I had to bring it with me to the last day. I made new friends this year and we went through so much together (GLEE!), and a polaroid camera is perfect to capture memories. I keep it in this cute little pineapple drawstring I got online.

5. Revlon's new site design
This favourite was super spontaneous. I literally just went on the site a few hours ago and I LOVE IT. The new design is gorgeous, presenting the products to you in a sleek, no-bull format. This favourite is probably one of my strangest but gush about it I will!

I am also super excited for all the new Revlon products and I am hoping they come to Hong Kong!

That's all for my June Favourites. I hope you've enjoyed this post and I'll see you next week!

Seoul Haul

Hey guys :)

So the stupidest thing happened to me today: I sneezed in class, and had a sudden mega-nosebleed. The worst part was that we were in the middle of writing a practice exam-style Chinese essay. UGH, I'm still cringing :/

Anyways, I'm back from Korea! Ok, technically I came home last night but only now have I gotten the chance to write. As promised from last week, I have a haul of what I purchased in Korea. Here goes!

The most exciting purchase first, no? AHHHH I love these Toms sososo much! The shop had a ton of styles, and I really wanted to get the blue ombre crochet pair. But, I own a lot of blue-green clothing so I probably wouldn't get much wear out of them. This pair has a more neutral colour palette and I look forward to wearing them out.

If you've seen my post from a few weeks ago, you'll know I use innisfree skincare products. I purchased a night cream and everyday lotion because I was running out, and I really like the green tea line. I haven't previously used these products so I hope they moisturize my skin well.

Surprisingly, I didn't buy too many accessories in Korea even though I had expected myself to go overboard. I bought these earrings to use as pushpins for my cork board which I bought, maybe last month? I find that it adds something to the plain frame, without having to actually decorate the frame. The cork board will most likely appear in a future post, if anyone wants to see it. Oh, and these earrings were from Naughty Cat, a chain store of accessories which you can find scattered all over Seoul. They were only 1000 (HKD 7.6) per pair. Score!

Rings from Naughty Cat and Forever 21

To be honest, maybe I did go a teeny bit overboard with the nail products. I just had a long list of stuff I wanted to purchase, and luckily I managed to find them all.

Black and white polishes from Holika Holika
Sally Hansen Insta-dri top coat from Olive Young (I have been looking for this for ages!)
Laneige sheer blue tint polish from Atrium

I was especially excited when I picked up the blue tint polish because it reminded me of the OPI Sheer Tints, only it was a lot less expensive.

L-R:
Black nail striper from The Face Shop
#41 navy nail polish from innisfree
Modi Quick Dryer drops and Nail Polish Thinner from Atrium

Sometimes in beauty stores, they have insane buy one get one offers. It just so happened that the period of which we went to Korea, Modi in Atrium was having a buy one get one offer on all their products. I was in need of a nail polish thinner because some of my nail polish had gone gloopy, and I considered getting the Seche Vite one, only I wasn't sure I wanted to pay that much. I was so glad when I found the thinner in Korea, and it was very affordable considering I was getting two bottles.

Hair ties from Olive Young

Hand cream from innisfree

Nail polish remover in cream form from A'pieu

Petit Art perfume mist in Pure Yellow by Tony Moly

I absolutely love the packaging on the bottle! I also own the Fresh Green scent of this line, and it has a really cool vintage graphic of Lana del Rey.

Two more things before I end this post:
1. I have a tumblr now!
I recently decided to join the madness that we call tumblr. I did own an account in the past but I didn't really do anything on it, so I deleted it and started fresh. Follow me? http://icygirl79.tumblr.com/

2. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is freaking amazing!
God, every single episode is like watching a Marvel movie and it keeps me on the edge of my seat. There's so much action and there are so many plot twists. I especially like FitzSimmons :) I really, really hope this show gets picked up for more seasons after the second season ends!

That's all for today. I'm super tired now as I didn't get much sleep last night. Have a good day/night!

April 'Smalls' Haul

Hey guys :)

Before I begin, here's an update of the week:
1. My friends have been begging me to watch The Big Bang Theory since forever. I finally gave it a try and now I am in love with it! I would have never thought I would be interested in a show like that, as it revolves around Science, and Science to me is meh. Nonetheless, I highly enjoy the show! Howard's hair is absolute perfection, and I admire Jim Parson's ability to keep a straight face through all the jokes and funny bits. If you haven't picked up the message, GO WATCH IT!

2. I finally changed the strings on my guitar after 5 years (when I bought it). The new strings are wonderfully bouncy, and I can't wait to play more songs.

Anyways, today I have my first haul! During Easter break, many shops came out with new Spring/Summer collections. I went shopping several times and picked up some really cool stuff. A few posts ago I mentioned that I would be doing this haul post; technically yes, but not of everything I purchased. The clothing is really hard to capture on camera as they take up a lot of space, which I don't have at the moment. So, I've decided to do smaller things such as accessories, beauty products etc, as the title suggests.

As a disclaimer, I am in no way bragging about the things I have purchased. This haul is for me to give my opinions on the products, and to tell you about the new things in store so you can go pick them up yourselves!

So going back to the last day of term, I went to the Mannings in Shatin Plaza to see if I could find the new The Amazing Spiderman 2 x Revlon nail polishes I saw online. Unfortunately I couldn't, but I came across their mini OPI stand. On the bottom shelf where minis were displayed, there were pairs of polishes that were on offer for $79. I picked a pair up as OPI is normally sold for $70-$80 per bottle in Hong Kong. The colours are 'A Grape Fit' (mentioned in THIS post) and 'Lights of the Emerald City' from the OPI Oz The Great and Powerful collection. I really like 'A Grape Fit' and 'Lights of the Emerald City' is really unique as a glitter topper.

From H&M I bought this pair of floral plimsolls. The pattern is so fun, and the colours go well together.

From Typo by Cotton On, I first bought a tin of mini floral polaroids. I stuck a few on my wall as decoration to add some colour.

I also got a blue-lid glass jar. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to use it for, but I know I'll definitely use it!

At the checkout there were little basins filled with bracelets for charity. This one in particular caught my eye; I love how the closure plays a big part in the overall design. Also, the colour is really bright and colourful.

Now on to Forever 21! I picked out several items from their, as they have a really big variety of accessories. First, a flower crown! I have been wanting to make/buy a flower crown for ages. This one is perfect because the flowers aren't too exaggerated, so I don't look too weird.

I was running low on rings because many of them have started turning pink. I got this really cute silver laurel-esque midi ring, and a pair of gold-toned rings. I'm planning to wear the gold ring with red and blue on my right pinky, a little bit like how Alex Turner wears his Death Ramps ring on his right pinky :)

Next, a pack of crease-less hairties. I love these hairties because they don't crease my hair, and they look great when layering arm candy.

Of course if I went to Causeway Bay, I would have to go to Dude's. I bought a small bottle of Air body mist. It smells like pears and flowers, and it's pretty good.

Now for one of my favourite purchases: Baby Lips Electro! The colours I picked out were "Berry Bomb" and "Pink Shock". I am absolutely in love with them because the colours look really nice on my lips, especially "Berry Bomb".

Online, I found this really cool iPhone case which I desperately needed as my old one was falling apart. This one is so tumblr-y, with the whole 'rad' thing, the polaroid, the TopShop socks...

The best purchase saved for last: new earphones! I was on a minibus going out and I wanted to listen to some music, and I realized the right side of my earphones were broken. I literally was like NOOOOOOO. So I obviously had to get a new pair. I really liked the Cloud earphones that my friend got for me for my birthday last year, so I bought the exact same pair in a different colour scheme. Before owning those earphones, I wasn't that into in-ear earphones. I'm so glad I got used to them because they are better for my ears than... non-in-ear earphones... if that makes sense.

Phew, finally finished! There's a lot of stuff but I have been collecting these things over a period of 1-2 months. Tomorrow's the first day of term and I am genuinely terrified. Before we get back to school, I can't sleep the night before, and I worry about things that I shouldn't worry about. But I do... Anyone else out there who feels the same? :/ But nonetheless, I wish you good luck for tomorrow, whether you're going back to school, to school, to work etc.

That's all for today. Have a good day/night!

DIY: Temporary Cuticle Tattoos

Hey guys :)

Oh gosh, I originally wasn't going to post today as I have fallen sick. As I'm writing this post, my nose is dripping. Attractive, no?

Anyways, I've been planning this DIY post for quite some time (I haven't done one in over a month!). Cuticle tattoos, I think, have been totally shunned. Not a lot of people like this trend, but I absolutely LOVE this trend; it adds a little extra oomph to basic nails. I first learnt about them when surfing the net for nail colours, and have been drawing them on ever since. They are available to purchase online, but with expensive/unavailable shipping to Hong Kong, why bother? This tutorial is super easy, as all my other ones are, so let's hop into it!

Just as a disclaimer, this idea is NOT mine. I've been doing some research on YouTube and Pinterest, and this is what I've found. Credits to whoever came up with this first.

You will need:
1. Liquid eyeliner
2. Liquid bandage

1. To start off, prep your cuticle area. Moisturize them with a cuticle oil, then remove the excess. An oily surface makes it harder for the eyeliner to stay put.

2. With your eyeliner, draw on your design. Easy ones to start with are triangles or lines. They have a cool, indie vibe which is so Coachella-esque.

3. To make the tattoos last a little longer, spray on the liquid bandage to ensure it is waterproof. I was totally boggled when I came across this stuff. Bandages... in liquid form? My mum found this in a Watsons somewhere and it costs around $40-$50. I only use my bottle for this DIY, but it works well on what it is meant to be used for i.e. cuts, scrapes.

And you are done. Three steps, two things needed; it doesn't get easier than this! For once my nails and cuticle tattoos came out right. Normally, they both come out a wreck; the polish gets on my skin, the lines of the tattoos aren't straight. Miraculously, they both decided to behave today. On my nails I have OPI's A Grape Fit from the OPI Brights 2009 Bright Pair collection. It's a shade darker than OPI's Do You Lilac It? which I used to own, but it got lost somewhere after I moved :(

The tattoos last depending on how careful you are. If you rub it off, it'll come off instantly. If you are more cautious, it may last 1-2 days. Eh, you can always redraw them on ;)

That's all for today, really hope you enjoyed this post! Have a good day/night!
